Dear Greg and Liz,

I was just sent your wondrously passionate Libertango from someone I want to love but has a long-distance (American) lover. I'm assuming she (a Koren) and I (a Canadian) will become special friends. But as the 'other' man, I want to seek those remote possibilites. I've just spent an hour trying to decifer every important word by the 'narrator' but missing the complete. Would you kindly send me the proper wordage. I can, at least, give it (plus your CD)to her as a friend's Christmas present. Please hurry, if you can, 'cause time is running out on a move to win her over.

- Alun Josef Seguin

Dear Alun,

Thanks so much for your interesting question!

Here is the wording of the "Libertango" video. Contrary to what one might expect, the script is not from an actual textbook or lecture; this brainy yet fictitious jargon was written exclusively for this video by a friend who has a science degree! It is simply a pseudo-scientific soliloquy filled with double entendres:

"...the force between two oppositely charged masses depends on the magnitude and distribution of charge in each body and the distance between them. The force is inversely proportioned to the square of the distance between the two bodies, resulting in moderate attraction when removed from one another but exponentially greater attraction when in close proximity...."

*performance*

"....towards one another and collide in a cycle whose duration depends on the elasticity of the collision. The bodies ultimately will come to rest together with the initial potential energy of their electrostatic attraction having been dissipated through the kinetic energy of their collision."

Enjoy and good luck with all your endeavors! ;)

Cheers and Happy New Year,
Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 2008)

Dear Greg and Liz,

I just listened to your arrangement/performance of the Swan. It is beautiful. It reminds me of Tears from Suite No. 1 for 2 Pianos by Rachmaninoff. I see that you have arranged other movements from Carnival of the Animals. When will your CD with the performance of these be available and how can I get it?

- Sue

Dear Sue,

Thank you for your kind words about our arrangement and performance of "The Swan." (How funny that you mentioned "Tears" from Rachmaninoff's Suite No. 1 -- we love that piece!) Our debut album Reimagine contains a recording of "The Swan" as well as several movements from our Zoological Fantasy (loosely based on the Carnival of the Animals). This CD was released at the beginning of 2008 and is available at CD Baby, amazon.com, iTunes, and DigStation. There is also a special bonus DVD featuring several of our music videos, including "The Swan."

Dear Greg and Liz,

I am wondering when are you guys performing in Australia? I am sure it would be an awesome performance and I am looking forward to experience the brilliant performance of Greg and Liz. Thank you.

- Agus Sandjaya

Dear Agus,

We would absolutely love to perform in Australia! Unfortunately we don't have any concerts scheduled there yet, but we hope to in the near future! If you know of anyone who may be able to make such an event happen, please have him or her contact our managers at info@venusartists.com.

Thanks for your support,

Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

As said and said million times before, your music really is absolutely fantastic! Thank you very much, you bring new breathe to classical music. I really know how difficult it is, especially today. Is there any chance of hearing you in Russia in Moscow or St.Petersbourgh?

Regards,

Ilya Petoushkoff, Moscow

Dear Ilya,

Thank you so much for your warm words! Both of us are avid fans of Russian composers and pianists -- we have the highest respect for the legendary Russian musical tradition. (In fact, one of Liz's teachers was Russian.) Plus, we both love Russian literature! It would be exciting for us to perform in Russia sometime, so put in a good word for us with your local concert presenter. Many thanks for your fantastic support and Happy New Year!

- Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

DO you guys sell a piano duet books?

- Irene

Dear Irene,

At the moment, we do not sell piano duet books. However, we have many piano duet compositions individually for sale on our website on the compositions page. In any case, we're always thinking of educational incentives to encourage people to play duets and we're continually creating new music, so we very well may sell duet books in the future!

-Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

You have to come to Zurich, Switzerland, very soon!! Please ask your agency to contact our Music Hall, Tonhalle Zurich. Contact directly David Zinman. Good Luck. You and your music are just great. Full of spirit and joy.

Love Nicole

Dear Nicole,

Thank you so much for your kind message. We would be absolutely thrilled to perform in Switzerland -- we have quite a number of friends living there! We hope such an opportunity will come to fruition -- feel free to throw in a good word for us at the Music Hall. ;-) Many thanks for the contact information, and we hope to meet you in the future!

Best,
Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

I love watching you two play! It's absolutely amazing. You guys are like my role models currently. I think that "Blue Danube Fantasy" is right up there with "The FIrebird Suite". I LOVE it. Are you going to do any new songs along the line of Tichelli or Ron Nelson or maybe even John Adams (Tichelli- Blue Shades, Nelson- Rocky Point HOliday and Sonoran Desert, Adams- Harmonium: Wild Night). They are absolutely amazing songs to begin with and I believe with your unique touch that you could make these even more enjoyable. SO what do you think of that?

Hi Anon,

Thanks so much for your enthusiastic comments -- we are so flattered to be considered role models! Thanks also for your terrific suggestions. Yes, we are always looking for new material to transcribe, and we have considered creating a series of compositions based on great American songs, old and new. (We already have John Adams on our list, and we'll definitely listen to the rest of your suggestions.) Whatever we choose to do, we promise to put our Anderson & Roe stamp on it!

-Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

Wow your music is awesome. I am not a musician myself but I certainly do appreciate good quality. Thank you. So I read your bios; I was wondering (my apologies if this is inappropriate) if you are a couple? Keep making great music- I hope I have the opportunity to see you live someday!

- Liz

Hi Liz,

Thanks for your compliments! Don't worry about your question: many people have asked us the same! Contrary to appearances, we are not a couple, but we have been very good friends for years. (Perhaps our acting skills aren't so bad after all!) We feel lucky to have both a close friendship and fruitful professional partnership.

Thanks again for your support and we hope to meet you at a concert in the future!

- Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

hi! how could i read the sheet music of la campanella by Franz Liszt? Could you please teach me?

- Shaira

Hi Shaira,

We wish we could teach you in person, but it would be better for you to find a more local teacher to help you. "La Campanella" is a virtuosic workout, so we would suggest learning it very slowly and taking it apart, passage by passage, hands apart then together. You can work it up gradually to the correct tempo, with a metronome if you wish. Those are just a few suggestions. In the end, some guidance from a skilled teacher and lots of patient practice will help you reach your goal. Good luck!

- Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

You guys are great!!! Would you ever consider coming up to Montreal or Vancouver ?? BTW, I would like to inroduce you both to a wonderful voice ensemble called 'musica intima', bases in Vancouver.

Patrick from Montreal

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for your message! We would love to return to Canada to perform. Both of us love Canada -- we've both performed in Banff and Greg has visited Montreal, so hopefully we'll have the opportunity to perform in Montreal and/or Vancouver in the near future. If we perform in the latter city, we'll have to check out "musica intima." You can always help our cause by pluggin us at your local concert series.

- Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

I'm a pianist myself from Switzerland and stumbled upon your Libertango video on Youtube and thought the arrangement was really awesome! For a Conservatory end project we have to organize a concert to give and since my topic will be "love" I would so much like to play this piece and include it in my program; it is ideal with all the passion and looks like a lot of fun to play too. I read that the arrangement will be for sale after 2010. Would there be any possibility I could get/buy a score of your arrangement before? I was so excited to read on your site that you sold your arrangements, and then so dissapointed this one wasn't ready yet. I would like to play it so much (I love playing Piazzolla) and my concert will be already coming April. Thanks so much!

Hello,

Thanks so much for your message and your interest in our Piazzolla arrangement. Unfortunately, due to legal reasons, we are unable to provide the composition to the public at the current time. (We wish we could make exceptions, we really do!) We're sorry we cannot accommodate your request but we appreciate your enthusiasm for our arrangement.

Have you considered some of Barber's "Souviners" or Schoenberg's Waltzes (shockingly tonal!) for four hands/one-piano? They may fit your topic well. :-)

Best wishes for your upcoming concert and have fun!

- Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

You guys are awesome. I play the duets and I would love to see what you do with Milhaud's Scaramouche! Also Schubert's Fantaisie (the 4-hand duet, not the Wanderer). Your playing is very sexy and fun but not easy to do what you are doing, no doubt about it! You make a great duo. - Carol B.

Dear Carol,

We appreciate your wonderful comments! There are dozens of works that we would love to play, including the Milhaud and Schubert. We are sure that these beloved staples of the duo repertoire will eventually appear on our programs. Thanks for your suggestions, and keep up the duet work!

- Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

I am a pianist/music director/accompanist from Atlanta. I played horn in bands and orchestras when younger and became fascinated with transcribing for piano or 2 pianos, certain orchestral pieces. I have just finished making the "Academic Festival Overture" for two piano four hands on Sibelius. If you would like it, I will email it to you (free of course.) Love your site. I am working on Roman Carnival and Zampa now.

- Robert Strickland

Dear Robert,

Thanks for your message -- we also think that many orchestral pieces work wonderfully on the piano! Regarding the "Academic Festival Overture," Brahms himself actually arranged a version for four hands at one piano. Nonetheless, it would be interesting to take a look at your version for two pianos, as we're always open to looking at new scores.

- Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Hello Greg and Liz,

You must get bored with all these compliments, but yes, I agree, truly amazing! When you're planning a "world tour", maybe you could consider one or two stops in Ireland? Dublin seems the first choice, but there's a good enough opera house too in Cork, 2nd city of the Republic ;-) All the best

- Caroline

Hi Caroline,

Thanks so much for your wonderful compliments! Yes indeed, we would love to perform in Ireland. Liz has performed in Dublin in the past, and she thinks the city is absolutely brilliant. We also have friends from Dublin and Cork so we hope that one day we'll find ourselves performing as a duo in both these cities. As always, feel free to put in a plug for us at your favorite concert series.

Cheers,
Greg & Liz (Dec. 30, 08)

Dear Greg and Liz,

Your music is amazing! I'm a writer, and a musician, and I use a lot of your works to inspire me and help me connet to my characters. Thanks a lot! But I was Jus wondering if Greg and Liz...were you both on the MTV Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Internship Contest? (Greg as Gryffindor and Liz as Ravenclaw) And is there any wya that you two will be re-writing any Harry Potter compositions? Just wondering!

- Amy

Hi Amy,

You have an impressive memory! That was us on MTV prancing about as Gryffindor and Ravenclaw students. Greg even spent a week on the sets working with the cast and crew in Watford, England!

We certainly have toyed with the idea of working with the Harry Potter soundtrack in our compositions. The biggest obstacle preventing us from doing so: copyright law. As we learned from our "Star Wars Fantasy," copyright law is messy, confusing, and complicated (Juilliard and John Williams helped pave the way for a couple performances of our piece). In some cases, copyright law is absolutely necessary and important. In other cases, we think it goes too far (do the great grandchildren of the man who altered the "Happy Birthday" rhythm really deserve the thousands of dollars they receive every time the melody is heard on TV??).

As such, when creating arrangements for piano duo, we've decided to stick *mostly* to music in the public domain (...most music composed before 1923) until we have the funds to hire a team of lawyer or someone volunteers to help us out. We love working with relevant, popular music, but it's only worth the extra energy on occasion. (Don't worry; we'll continue to find ways incorporate new music into our arrangements by working with or around these laws.)

For all you Harry Potter fans, we *do* perform our own arrangement of Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," which has a certain magical quality about it. It's about a young magician who finds himself in a bit of trouble. We think J. K. Rowling (and Harry Potter) would approve.

- Greg & Liz (Nov. 4, 2008)

Dear Greg and Liz,

I love watching you play! I don't know when these other questions were posted, but I was wondering if there was any progress on the Libertango arrangement yet? It looks like so much fun to play!

- Lydia

Hi Lydia,

You're right! We really ought to start dating these. November 1st, 2008. :-)

...no progress on the "Libertango" arrangement yet... We've been really excited about some of our upcoming projects (new videos -- some live performances and some fancy, wild Anderson & Roe-style music videos! new compositions and arrangements! new repertoire! new ways of presenting old music!), and so we haven't gotten around to tending to the legalities and manuscripts of our "Libertango" score. But fear not! It's still on our list of things to do! As we stated in a previous question and answer, we intend to release "A New Account of the Blue Danube Waltzes" some time in 2010, and it's likely that "Libertango" will follow not too long after.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz,

I am extremely impressed with the life and passion you infuse into your piano playing. I was on youtube, searching for piano duets. I then saw the video for your Blue Danube Fantasy. I was thinking to myself, "Well, how bad could it be?" and clicked. To put things lightly, I was blown away. What a wonderful duo the two of you are. I could see the immense joy the both of you have in playing the piano and I found myself smiling along (something which I rarely do, especially when watching musical performances). I know that the two of you have already been flooded with song requests, but I simply have to request the both of you to do a rendition of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. I personally believe it to be a classical-jazz masterpiece, and would be very interested in seeing how the both of you turn it into your own piece. Still, judging by your abilities, I would be surprised if Gershwin wouldn't take his hat off to the both of you. I would ask you two to come over here to Singapore to perform. It is a real pity that I am too young to influence the arts scene (17 year old student w00t). Haha, but seriously, could the both of you please try to perform in Singapore one day? If anything, you guys will add the life, flavour, vitality and (most importantly) youth needed so much in our arts scene. Thank you so much.

- Jose Hong

Dear Jose,

Thank you very much for your wonderful comments! We are so happy that you like our Blue Danube video and that you got a sense of the joy we experience together at the piano. Thanks also for your suggestion to put our own spin on Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." Both of us are big fans of Gershwin, and recently Liz had a great time performing the "Rhapsody" with orchestra. We will definitely consider doing our own duo version of this legendary piece and we already have a list of Gershwin songs that we'd love to tackle, so keep you eyes and ears open for a potential Gershwin surprise! Also, we hope we'll make a trip to Singapore in the future -- we are thrilled to have such supportive fans on the other side of the globe!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz,

So fortunate to have stumbled onto your existence. Am completely blown away -- not just by your skills, but also by your perception of what music should be about AND your delivery of the music. ASTOUNDINGLY RIGHT ON! Please do not take any offense, but I just have to be brash here and ask this question: Do you premiere new works? I have this 'jazzical' work that is just so 'YOU'! --filled with color, emotion, rhythm, dance...LIFE! It's the real deal; not screwin' around here, and a crowd-pleaser to boot. Honest. And definitely a 'signature' work for whomever makes the debut. Not to mention a duo piano transcription off the orchestral score would be fantastic. I know, I know, I know....seeing (hearing) is believing. Well, I can accomodate that, too. Piano & orchestral scores as well as CD's for both are ready to mail at your request. Again, I apologize for being so bold, but you just moved me so profoundly on so many levels, and what I have is so tailor-made for you, I just had to ask. Hope to hear from you. Most Sincerely,

- e.w. pond

Dear E.W.,

It really means a lot to us to know that our music and ideals resonate with you -- thank you for your warm words! We are definitely open to new music, so we would be interested in taking a look at your "jazzical" creation. Just send us an email at andersonroe@yahoo.com and we'll check out your music. Thanks for your enthusiastic support!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz,

heya i found you both on youtube and i thought that's really really good...any chance of dropping by South East Asia? Malaysia or Singapore perhaps? All the best all the way!! :)

- Cookie

Hi Cookie,

We're glad you like our YouTube videos! We hope we'll make it to Malaysia or Singapore in the future so we'll get to play for our amazing fans in Southeast Asia!

Cheers,

Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz,

You guys are amazing. Upon watching some of your vids and reading your bio, I feel awful for quitting piano at age 10. I'm 18 now and I've restarted playing about 1.5 years ago, but I don't play classical. I just play some pop/rock for my own amusement, and my knowledge of theory hasn't expanded much (I just play broken chords with my left hand, vocals on my right etc.) In any case, I was wondering if you guys would ever consider doing more arrangements for non-classical pieces in the future? I think you could attract even more of an audience. I was first interested in the idea of 2-piano arrangements when I first saw this: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=lMFr-S62-9w Anyways, ahem, my request is if you could be so kind as to make some Muse arrangements for 2 pianos =)

- Joe

Hi Joe,

YES, we've got non-classical arrangements on the horizon. We both are inspired by all types of music, and Liz especially is a huge fan of Brit rock (thanks for the Muse vid and suggestion!). At the moment we have plans to transcribe some Radiohead, Beatles, and Nirvana for two pianos, and we have many other ideas for rocking out! Stay tuned!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz,

Hi, My name is Mervyn Ewing and I am an amateur piano player and also am an artist and teach community classes how to paint almost anything. My wife teaches the guitar and we call ourselves "Artistic Sound" I find your playing so inspiring and fun. My favorite composer is Chopin and was wondering if you both do any of Chopin's waltzes and post them on youtube....would love to see them. I come from Northern Ireland...presume you live in the States! Thanks again,

Mervyn

Dear Mervyn,

Bravo to you and your wife for being involved in music and art! Chopin is one of our absolute favorite composers, too. We've each played a substantial amount of his solo works (the waltzes, etudes, preludes, nocturnes, mazurkas, sonatas, concerti, etc.) but have not recorded any of them... Perhaps we'll transcribe some of his music for piano duo!

Best wishes to you from the US,

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz!

I am wondering when are you guys going to perform in australia. I am looking forward to hear and watch your outstanding performance. Thank you

- Agus Sandjaya

Dear Agus,

At the moment we have no concerts set up in Australia, but we hope an opportunity to visit will arise soon. We have always wanted to experience the beauty and culture of your magnificent country, and it would be dream come true to perform there (especially at the stunning Sydney Opera House!). If enough Aussies spread the word, perhaps our dream will become a reality in the near future!

Thanks so much for your support,

Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz!

I was just wondering if and when you are going to publish your amazing, unique compositions??

- John R.

Dear John,

We were just talking about that topic recently! Here's the good and bad news:

Good news #1: We plan to make our "New Account of the Blue Danube Waltzes" available for sale in 2010.

Good news #2: Many of our favorite compositions are already for sale. Please visit the Compositions page for more information.

Good news #3: More compositions and arrangements are on their way, including a series of encores for piano/four-hands. We'll let our mailing list know as these pieces become available.

Bad news #1: There are still copyright issues pertaining to the "Star Wars Fantasy" that we haven't tended to. We're too excited about our upcoming projects to worry about our past ones!

Bad news #2: There are still copyright issues pertaining to the "Libertango" that we have yet to tend to. We really do hope to get around to this someday, and we'll let our mailing list know as soon as that day arrives.

Thank you so much for your interest in our music!

- Greg & Liz

Hello Greg and Liz!

So the past few weeks I've been looking for a classical duet for my teacher and I to play. We just played schuberts fanasie in F minor, which is simply an amazing duet, and I want to find something that is as awesome as it. Do you know of any classical four hand music that that would live up to the shuberts standards? Thanks

- Michael

Dear Michael,

Debussy's Petite Suite is one of our all-time favorites; at times, its melodies are unbearably beautiful. Also, look into the Brahms Waltzes, Children's Games by Bizet, the Poulenc Sonata (for four-hands/one-piano), From the Bohemian Forest by Dvorak, and the perennial favorite: Brahms' Hungarian Dances. Also consider the following transcriptions: Ravel's Pavane pour une infante defunte, Saint-Saens's Dance Macabre (not to be confused with the Anderson & Roe two-piano transcription), Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, the Verdi opera arrangements, and the Bach Brandenburg concertos.

Ooooh! And who could forget the beautiful sonatas for piano/four-hands composed by Mozart?!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz,

Have you ever considered playing the Busoni transcription for 2 pianos of Mozart's Magic Flute Overture? Here is a performance by Gilels and Zak: http://youtube.com/watch?v=mGvHN3fKUco

- Larry LeBow

Dear Larry,

Actually, we have considered playing Busoni's transcription of the overture. It's a stunning arrangement and works quite well for two pianos, doesn't it? We're presently in the midst of a number of projects pertaining to the music of Mozart. We hope these projects will captivate your attention as much as the aforementioned piece!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz,

I watched Greg's performance of Ligeti' Étude 13. Congratulations! I am wondering if I could send you a piano piece I composed a decade ago if you'd be interested in playing it? Thank-you again.

- Francis P Ubertelli

Dear Mr. Ubertelli,

You made Greg blush. We're glad you like his performance of Ligeti's Etude No. 13, and you may be interested to know that we have plans to learn some of Ligeti's music for two pianos.

Feel free to send us music via our Contact page. We are always interested in looking at new music, although we can't promise to program it anytime soon. Our repertoire wish list is huge, but we always have the wish list handy in case we're looking for that perfect piece to fill a program. Who knows? It could be your piece! If you're able to, please email us a file of the score.

Best wishes,

Greg & Liz

Dear Greg and Liz,

What would you say is your mission, exactly? You're both excellent pianists who try to break the mold and expose wider audiences to classical music, but I'd like to hear it in your words. And, on another, fairly unrelated subject, what do you know of the Liszt two piano versions of the operatic fantasies? I think that the antiphonal possibilities are gorgeously exploited in Norma, for example. Thanks

- Daniel Baker

Dear Mr. Baker,

We defined our mission several years ago, and it has literally shaped all of our decisions as individuals, as musicians, and as a team. You can actually find it hidden away on this site; it's one of the trivial tidbits on the fun facts page. It really isn't so trivial, but it fit in well with the rest of the tidbits, and we try to repeat it as often as we can. So, bombs away:

Greg & Liz's mission

To connect with others; to engage, provoke, illuminate; to serve as a conduit for the composer's voice; to express our inner lives; to share the joy and fulfillment that only music can elicit

To free the world from the constraints of sleep-inducing concerts

To make classical piano music a relevant and powerful force in society

As for Reminiscences de Norma, we urge you to purchase Greg's solo album, "On Wings of Song!" You'll find Greg playing the solo version there, and he continues to perform the work on many of his solo concerts. It would be unnecessarily confusing for him to learn both versions of the piece: a recipe for disaster. (It would be pretty embarrassing to slip into the two-piano version in the middle of a solo recital!) Similarly, although we used to play Ravel's La Valse in its two-piano version, we took it out of our performing repertoire when Liz started playing the solo version in concerts and competitions. Too confusing.

You're right; the antiphonal possibilities are wonderful in the two-piano version of Reminiscences de Norma, but (and a big "but" here), if we were to ever perform the work, Greg would insist upon recreating the six-or-so minutes of music that Liszt cut from the solo version in arranging the work. Liszt cut Greg's favorite arias (and the arias that add the most dramatic weight to the paraphrase, no less)!

Thanks for your interest in our work!

- Greg & Liz

hello Greg and Liz!!!

your piano duo is amazing! I found your video on youtube at first time and few days ago I found this site. each videos are incredible and great. I hope see your concert someday. I live in south korea. I'm not sure but when will you come here for concert? I think many people are waiting for you.

- J.S. Lee

Dear J.S. Lee,

Thanks!! It means a great deal to us when people respond to what we do.

We hope to perform in Korea sometime in the next couple years, and we'll definitely let our mailing list know when the dates are scheduled!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

Hi, I would like to know what SMP level your star wars duet would be on? I am a college student majoring in piano and fell in love w/ it! :P Thank you for your time!

- Brittany

Dear Brittany,

We're glad you like our Star Wars Fantasy! We love playing the piece, but it is extremely challenging. The first and last movements are some of the most technically difficult music we have ever played. Unfortunately, we don't know what SMP level it would be on.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I think that you are wonderfullll! I first saw u yesterday on Youtube and I'm AMAZED!!! I also play the piano, and I am playing with my twin sister also...we won some european competitons..but..doesn't matter, my question is: PLEASE, how can I reach the scores (sheet music, music notes) for your version of libertango??! looot of regards from Serbia

- Melita

Dear Melita,

Thanks for your interest (and everybody else's for that matter)! Unfortunately the music is not available to the public, due to a number of issues and complications. If we ever make the score available, we'll inform our mailing list. In the meantime, we suggest you view our "compositions" page to learn about our other arrangements and original compositions that are for sale!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I was browsing through the repetoire and I caught eye of an arrangement of Lennon's "Imagine" for piano four hands. Is there anywhere I can hear this? Perhaps sheet music? :)

- Gabe

Dear Gabe,

You've got a good eye. Occasionally the arrangement makes its way into our live performances (usually as a surprise)... which is probably the only place where you'll have the opportunity to hear it.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

Are all the duets you two have played your own compositions? You guys are amazing by the way.

- Serena Liu

Dear Serena,

No, not at all. We love playing the staples of the piano repertoire, especially the piano duo music of Mozart, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff. You can visit our repertoire page to get an idea of what sorts of repertoire regularly appears on our concert programs.

Thanks!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

Hello!! You both are amazing pianists. I love the new trailer. -=) I'll be an incoming piano student this fall semester at the Manhattan School of Music. I'll be finishing my B.A. Genetics degree at Rutgers University this summer, and I was wondering if you have any advice to lend to an incoming piano student? Genetics is a far long way from piano.. but ever since I've been taking lessons from my teacher at Juilliard, I've realized that piano is something that I want to keep studying and share with the world, something far different from Genetics. Do you have any advice to give to a new piano student? I know I'm probably going to die at a conservatory, with lots and lots of practice ahead of me, but I'm willing to go through anything that comes at me. -=) I only did Genetics to make my parents happy. Berlioz syndrome? Haha. Awesome CD by the way!!

- Czarina

Dear Czarina,

We are so happy you like our new trailer and CD -- thank you for your kind compliments! First of all, we want to commend you for earning a degree in Genetics. Your work in another field will definitely contribute to your musicianship. For one thing, the discipline and focus that it takes to earn an academic degree will serve you well in the world of music. Also, we believe that the more you know, the more interesting you will be as a person and as a pianist.

As for advice, we simply urge you to hold onto your passion for music -- it's very clear that you love the piano, and just remember this whenever you face challenging situations. Take advantage of the resources that the school has to offer, whether it be the library, free concerts, or performance opportunities. Also, even though it's important to work hard, we would encourage you to make time for yourself away from the piano, spend time with friends, and explore New York City.

Best of luck with everything!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

From what I see, none of the four hands, one piano music is available. Is that correct. Thanks.

- Mrs. Usher

Dear Mrs. Usher,

No, that is not correct. You can purchase our arrangement of Sabre Dance for four hands, one piano. In addition to this score, we are working on a set of "encores" (for the same instrumentation) that will be available for sale within the next year. Next week, we will put the finishing touches on a couple of short compositions based on Irish tunes and we'll add them to the list.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

First of all let me say what a huge fan I am of your collective work. I have recently purchased your CD "Reimagine" from amazon.com and im eagerly awaiting its arrival. I was wondering, with your permission, if it would be ok for me to create a fan group on facebook for you guys. I searched on facebook for a group, and to my shock discovered that there were none! So I thought I'd be the first to make one in your honour. I was also asking for permission to post some of your videos, and maybe your schedule for when and where you will be performing, on the facebook group. Please let me know if this will be ok with you. I will always ask you before I post anything.

Your best fan, Marcel aka Wolfgang

Dear "Wolfgang,"

Go for it!

Dear Greg & Liz,

We were in the audience yesterday in Mahtomedi and were blown away by your artistry, virtuousity and passion. Rite of Spring was breathtaking. It was all breathtaking! Thank you so much for your sharing this wonderful music with us. Now, a question. How do you achieve the captivating sounds on Libertango? Do you pluck the strings, or mute them with your hands? Where did you get this idea? The result is utterly magical, almost intoxicating. Have you considered taking that compositional element and improvising further with it? Please consider it! Thanks again for a wonderful performance.

- Karlyn Eckman

Dear Karlyn,

Thanks! We had a fantastic time performing in Mahtomedi and we're thrilled that you enjoyed the concert!

We mute strings while playing our arrangement of Libertango. In creating the transcription, we wanted to find a way to bring the melody to the fore, like a violin singing out over a tango band. Unfortunately, the dense musical textures created by four hands at one piano make such an effect difficult, and the piano is not capable of creating a sultry and singing tone like that of a violin. We figured if we made the rest of the piano sound bad, perhaps the melody would sound better. Hence, the muting of specific strings.

...not to mention, we like to explore places that are typically unseen... ;-)

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I love your Star Wars Fantasy!! When are you going to put them for sale? Please make more of your compositions available for sale online. Cheers,

- Andrew Lee

Dear Andrew,

Thanks!! We have a bit to work out with Lucas Films before we can make the piece for sale. We're sorry, but we've been tied up with loads of other activities and projects, and haven't had time to think about it. It's on our list of things to do, and we definitely hope to get around to it in the next couple of years. Thanks for your interest and enthusiasm!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

hi my name lisa.i´m from germany and i study at castle belvedere in weimer. i have a question. i heard the blue danuble fantasy and it was fantstic. so i want play it too. but where can i find the notes?

- lisa

Dear lisa,

Unfortunately, the score to our New Account of the Blue Danube Waltzes is unavailable for sale. Just like our Libertango arrangement, we have decided to keep it exclusive for a while (we know, how nasty of us!) and the pieces are notated in illegible handwritten manuscripts. We'll let you know when either of them are plugged into a computer and become available for sale. Thanks for your interest, however!

If you're looking for a wild and virtuoso-style four-hand/one-piano arrangement, we recommend our arrangement of Khatchaturian's Saber Dance. It takes a good deal of time to coordinate between the two pianists, but it's also a lot of fun. There are also a number of other compositions and arrangements for two pianos available for sale on the compositions page.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

You two are amazing! Before you met at Juilliard, did you have much experience with playing in ensembles, accompanying, etc.?

- Erica

Dear Erica,

During his junior high and high school years, Greg played in numerous chamber ensembles and orchestras as a violinist (he played violin from age 8 - 18). During the summers, he attended music festivals (as a pianist and a violinist) where he played a good deal of chamber music.

Liz partook in a number of collaborative activities before college as well. She often accompanied her sister and she played in groups at the local music conservatory.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

Where did you meet? You guys are amazing! Let me know if greg has a little brother like identical!

- Patience

Dear Patience,

We met on the first day of college, upon moving into the Juilliard dorms. The two of us lived on the same floor. It was friendship at first sight.

Interestingly enough, we knew of one another before then. We were both competitors in the final round of the Music Teachers National Association High School Piano Competition (the MTNA-Yamaha Competition) back in 1998. Greg stayed around to watch Liz play after competing himself (he had huge admiration for her skills even then), but unfortunately, we didn't meet until two years later at Juilliard.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

Hello guys- I saw a video you made some time ago, in which you parody the typical video response to YouTube submissions. It was hysterical, but now I can't find it anywhere online - help! BTW, I think the Blue Danube paraphrase is a genuine masterpiece of composition - whatever it may owe to Godowsky, Liszt or others, it strikes me as a real work of genius. Bravo!

- Dan

Dear Dan,

You've come to the right place. It's here on our website! Here's the link.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

When do you come to play in Germany? We are waiting for you! Love your Piazolla piece. But also the Swan. And of course the Blue Danube. Amazing - I was gobsmacked about the video on Youtube. Did I mention the Pas de Deux? You not only play the piano (Flügel), but you send also musical energy to the people - sparks of enchantment. Thank you!

- Reinhard

Dear Reinhard,

Wow! Thank you! You are so kind. We definitely hope to perform in Germany some day, and we would appreciate anything you can do to get us there quicker. :-)

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

Hello, I did a search on music on You tube and i found blue Danube and Libertango and they were great! Anyway What country are you from and what grade are you both in? Thanks!

- Dolohov

Dear Dolohov,

We were both born in America (Greg in Minnesota, Liz in Illinois), and we are both out of school.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I read your answer about why the Libertango score is not for sale yet, but I am wondering how soon you think it might be - would it be a matter of months, or years possibly? Thanks!

- Annee

Dear Annee,

Thanks for your interest (and everybody else's for that matter)! We can't promise anything regarding the release of the Libertango score (lots of complications, lots of complications...). At the very earliest: a year from now; at the latest: five to ten years from now. We'll definitely send a message to the mailing list when the day finally arrives!

However, we have some other plans up our sleeves that may interest you. This summer we hope to create a new series of arrangements for one-piano/four-hands -- arrangements that don't come plagued with copyright issues, arrangements that are equally cool and virtuosic, and arrangements that are... just... better (we have a lot more experience at this point). We'll be sure to let the mailing list know when these virtuoso four-hand pieces are ready.

Thanks for your patience Annee!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

A London, England concert would be nice...

- Chris

Dear Chris,

We agree. We're both Anglophiles, Liz especially. Please help us set up a concert in London. Thanks. :)

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

after your cd/dvd arrived at home today (in germany) i wondered if there will be a cd or dvd available from the star wars transcriptions? or maybe some other pieces like the sabre dance? i couldn't find information on your page about these things (perhaps i didn't search deeply enough) thanks for sharing your great talents with us

- Andreas

Dear Andreas,

A record label flirted with the possibility of recording the Star Wars transcriptions a while back, but as it currently stands, there are no plans to record this work. Our latest album required an enormous investment of time and energy to produce; nonetheless, we've already started tossing around dozens of ideas for future releases. We can't wait! Whenever our plans start to materialize, we'll start planting teasers online... :)

First, we need to finish editing the second trailer for "Reimagine!"

-Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

When are you coming to Australia? We have a brilliant Concert Hall in Melbourne and I WILL be there on opening night!

- Jenny Hibbens

Dear Jenny,

There's talk of a possible tour in New Zealand and Australia in 2010... rumors really. It's a ways off, but you could help this become a reality by pitching a plug at your local concert series!

Hope to see you soon,

- Greg & Liz

Hallo Greg & Liz,

- Max

Dear Max,

Hallo! Wir haben ein bisschen Deutch gelernt, but we communicate much better in English! Why haven't we learned the Schubert Fantasy in F minor? We're still young and we have plenty of years ahead of us. We're in no hurry. Besides, Schubert composed many wonderful works in addition to the Fantasy that are worthy of listeners' and performers' attention. We do hope to get around to some of Liszt's duo music someday, but probably not all of it; after reading through his duo works, we have the distinct impression that Liszt enjoyed composing music for solo piano more.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I am every time I hear you play/watch your videos. I'm mesmerized every time! Right now I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the CD "Reimagine" from the States since I wasn't able to purchase it here in the UK. Have you ever considered an arrangement of Liszt's "La Campanella" or maybe you could go wild with some some Czerny pieces such as "The Art of Finger Dexterity"? Thanks so much for pleasure you give to your audience and the refreshing approach you have. It's a delight! I hope one day soon we might see you perform here in the UK. In the meantime may I wish you both every success together. Yours sincerely,

- Trevor Hudson

Dear Trevor,

Good ideas! We have a giant list of future plans, including the composition of several new arrangements and original compositions. We'll be sure to add your ideas to the list!

Thanks for your kind words as well. We work hard and we love what we do, and it's always nice to hear that others appreciate it.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

Are you two personally involved, or is it strictly professional?

- Mike C

Dear Mike,

We love each other as friends, and that's the extent of it. The nature of our personal relationship (Greg is gay and Liz is straight) is very convenient, preventing romantic issues from complicating our artistic relationship. It also prevents our rehearsals (and performances, for that matter!) from disintegrating into lust-filled activities. Phew!

However, we don't like to say our artistic collaboration is "strictly professional" because that sounds so dry and severe. At the heart of our piano duo is an amazing friendship (not a "strictly professional relationship"), and we hope this radiates through whatever we do -- our performances, our compositions and arrangements, our videos, and our albums. For us, art is about human interactions, and our friendship helps remind us of this significance.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

Hello, I did a search on music on You tube and i found blue Danube and Libertango and they were great! Anyway What country are you from and what grade are you both in? Thanks!

- Dolohov

Dear Dolohov,

Thanks for the kind words! We were both born and raised in the United States (Greg in Minnesota and Liz in Illinois). We both received our Bachelor's and Master's degrees at The Juilliard School (we met on the first day of the freshmen orientation in 2000, and we graduated together in 2006). Greg is presently finishing his final year of class work at Yale University; he's working toward his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance. Liz has been out of school for the past two years; she is presently a member of The Academy -- A Program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

IS there ANY way I can purchase some of your transcriptions?

- Michael

Dear Michael,

Please visit our Compositions Page, where you can find information about purchasing our transcriptions and original compositions.

Thanks for your question!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I happened to find you two after researching for Piazzolla music. I really enjoy and have fun listening to your performance and behind the scene, can feel how you both really enjoy making the music video. I live in Perth, Australia. Question: Will you two consider to perform in Perth, Western Australia? PS. Western Australia is located in western part of Australia, in case if you two are wondering. >^v^<

- Yonas

Dear Yonas,

We would love to perform in Perth someday! We're in the midst of switching booking agents, and once things are settled, we will be sure to put in a good word for Perth.

Thanks for all the kind words!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

When I try to compose a song and I need a good melody, I always finding myself erasing pages of work. That's because I have an issue with copying original melodies of other songs without realizing it... any suggestions?

- Austin

Dear Austin,

We're not exactly sure what to say because we have the opposite problem. We create a lot of arrangements and we find it hard to stick to the melody. We keep finding ourselves straying!

Composing can be very challenging, and sometimes days will go by where very little progress is made. However, there are some days (those wonderful, wonderful hours) when pages of music fly off the pen, when inspiration is at its peak, and when everything feels easy and natural. Those hours typically produce the best music, and there is no way to know when it will happen.

Greg typically finds his mind the clearest when he's walking or when he's in the shower. (!)

Good luck and keep chugging away!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

When you arrange songs for yourselves, do you work off the original score?

- Joey

Dear Joey,

There's a simple answer to this question: we never work from the original score. We don't like to confine ourselves, and a blank sheet of music paper helps to provide that sense of freedom.

The piano is a very idiomatic instrument; it has strengths and weaknesses like any other, and it is important to take advantage of those strengths when composing. Often the best and most effective way is not the literal way.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I'm curious about your upcoming debut album! Why did you guys choose "Reimagine" as your album title? What is its significance and what messages would you like your album to convey? I'm really excited about the album and can't wait to hear more information about it! :)

- Jennifer

Dear Jennifer,

We're really excited about the album too! We poured vast amounts of energy, time, expense, and love into the album and we are proud of the result.

The title, "Reimagine," was inevitable. We've reimagined virtually everything we do as a piano duo, and we wanted our album to convey our unique approach to classical music.

Most notably, we've reimagined the music we play: everything on the album is composed or arranged by us (other than our intense rendition of The Rite of Spring, which is itself a reimagining of the orchestral version). This reimagining of music occurs in a variety of ways. For example, consider our two versions of Danse macabre: the CD begins with our "Remix" of Danse macabre; it's a complete departure from the original and an entirely new work in our distinctive musical language, although it employs the familiar motives from Saint-Saëns's Danse macabre and Fossils. The CD concludes with a much more traditional approach to the piece; we honor the spirit of the original but recreate the music according to the strengths of our instrumentation.

Of course, we haven't just reimagined the music we play. We've reimagined the concept of four hands at one piano; we treat one piano/four-hands as not only something suited to domestic life, but as something with huge potential for the grand concert stage. We've reimagined our approach to the presentation of classical music (view our music videos for an example of this!). We've reimagined the nature of a piano duo relationship. Unlike most piano duos, our relationship is not defined by family or romance, but by friendship, a friendship that yields awesome adrenaline and joy and shapes our collaborations as composers, performers, and creators. And finally, we reimagined our concept of a classical music album. We approached our album as independent producers (without the backing of a record label) so that we could retain complete artistic control over the album's content, design, and marketing. The album contains exciting repertoire that we love (and that we composed ourselves!), a bonus DVD featuring several of our YouTube videos, expansive and beautifully designed packaging, and short commentary written by us about our approach to music ("reimagine!"), about the nature of music listening, and about the beauty of collaboration. We have some bold marketing plans in the works, but we'd like for those plans to remain a surprise just yet!

What is the significance of the album and what messages would we like it to convey? This album will defy your expectations on all levels; it is shocking, exciting, revolutionary, and sophisticated, and it will resonate with you in a personal and powerful way. What is the music about? It's about the human experience, it's about racing heartbeats and physical friction, it's about the passions that undulate beneath the restraint of daily life, about the timelessness of dreams, the manic states of being, the unrest of our current times.

The official release date is January 15, 2008. Subscribers to the andersonroe.net mailing list will be able to purchase the CD earlier.

Thanks for your question!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I'm real anxious to see you in Boston. Will you be performing any time soon in the Boston area?

- Scott

Dear Scott,

We're anxious to perform in Boston! We hope to see you there soon!

We are presently undergoing a number of wonderful changes as a professional duo, most significantly in the way we are represented. As soon as things are settled, we'll let you know, and you can make a request to our booking agents on our behalf! However, don't expect to see us perform as a duo anytime this season apart from a few concerts here and there. Liz is wrapping up her tenure as a artist fellow of the Academy - a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Institute, and Greg is finishing his doctorate studies and dissertation at Yale University as well as composing the next album for The 5 Browns. Once this season is complete, however, we'll put our full focus into duo activities; that means composing and learning new music, filming more videos, and of course, performing more concerts.

In the meantime, you can keep your eyes peeled in Boston (or wherever for that matter) for our upcoming debut album - Anderson & Roe Piano Duo: Reimagine. The release date has been postponed, but we promise, it will be released early this winter. We can't wait! There are also a number of videos filmed and nearly ready to post.

Thanks for your interest Scott!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I saw that you were there when Steinway released their new line of concert clothing. After reading about that (and looking at the pictures =D) I was wondering if you knew where those clothes are going to be available?

Austin

Dear Austin,

As far as we are aware, this beautiful new line of concert clothing (mostly tuxedos) is available for purchase. Visit www.steinway.com for more information!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

As a lover of your music, I have to ask: who did you study with at Juilliard?

A young pianist

Dear young pianist,

Greg studied privately with Julian Martin; Liz studied with Yoheved Kaplinsky. As a duo we received coachings from Joseph Kalichstein, Margo Garret, and Jonathan Feldman, as well as with both Mr. Martin and Ms. Kaplinsky.

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

First, I must say that I have completely fallen in love with your music! Second, in daring to be different, do the two of you get to choose your wardrobe for performances or is it decided for you? Thanks!

Amanda

Dear Amanda,

Thanks for your enthusiasm!

We usually decide what to wear ourselves. It's something we think about quite a bit because we like to have our wardrobe enhance the music we play. We see it as an integrated part of the performance experience. Finding just the right ensemble of clothing can be tricky, sometimes involving last-minute stops to H&M or Zara's, but it's worth it if it helps set the right tone for the concert.

That said, we certainly wouldn't mind working with a stylist some day in the future!

- Greg & Liz

Dear Greg & Liz,

I did not notice a credit for the filming of the Piazzolla video. Did you do the filming yourself? If you did --how? I would like to replicate your work for the classical vocal world which needs your approach badly.

Douglas Martin

Dear Douglas,

Great! How exciting! We hope to see your videos online soon! Let us know when you post some.

We pretty much did everything ourselves, which is why we didn't feel the need to list everything over and over again. (Example -- Direction: Anderson & Roe, Camera work: Anderson & Roe, Video editing: Anderson & Roe, Pianists: Anderson & Roe, etc.) We set up all the stationary shots ourselves, and when only one of us was on screen, the other did the filming. For the moving shots, we asked a different friend for each video (see the actual YouTube pages of the videos for their names) to walk around with the camera while we played the piano. We gave them free reign to do whatever they wanted. We used Liz's moms' inexpensive camcorder to film and we did the editing ourselves using Apple's iMovie.

Watch the outtakes to get a better sense of the filming experience. You can also read more specifics (including funny anecdotes) on our blog, "Where Soloists Fear to Tread."
